How to Protect Your Roof During Stormy Weather Conditions

Roof damage from heavy rain and severe storms can cause secondary damage. Roofers could find leaks under the roof, in the ceiling, or in the walls. Mold could grow and spread rapidly. The key to protecting your roof against these weather conditions is to find vulnerabilities and hidden damage. Continue reading to discover how roofers protect your roof and prevent possible secondary damage.

Inspect Roofing Shingles

During a roof inspection, the roofers will look for cracked and curling shingles. They’ll replace any missing shingles and check for lifted corners. All shingles must be in their proper place to prevent easy entry points. You may need a total replacement if there are extensive sections of damaged or missing shingles.

Clean Out the Gutters and Downspouts

The roofers will check the gutters and remove dirt, leaves, and debris. Water must roll off the roof into the gutters, then flow from the gutters to the downspouts.

If water remains in the gutters, it will prevent more water from flowing off the roof. The roof edges will become damaged, and the decking will rot. The excess water will push the shingles upward and off your roof. The roofers will repair the gutters, if necessary, and remove all clogs.

Seal Up Flashing and Holes

Chimneys, skylights, and roof vents are the most common areas where water enters. Roofers will check the flashing and seal up these areas to prevent water leaks. The roofers may apply a sealant if they find any holes or penetrations in the roof.

Trim Precariously Hanging Branches

All tree branches should be at least 6 feet away from your roof. Adverse weather can cause trees and branches to topple and fall onto your roof. You should trim branches away from your roof or hire a professional to do it for you. You may need to remove the tree if it is seriously damaged or diseased.

Maintain Your Attic

Roofers can inspect your attic for ventilation and insulation issues. Proper ventilation stops moisture and heat buildup. They can replace your insulation when necessary to protect your attic and roof.

They will inspect your attic for a hidden roof leak and perform repairs as needed. The roofers will also look for damp wood and moisture. These conditions could result in mold infestations that spread quickly.

Protecting your roof against adverse weather and heavy rain mitigates common risks. A compromised roof can lead to secondary damage, including structural instability, wood rot, and mold. A roof inspection could uncover hidden damage and further vulnerabilities. Once the roofers find the damage, they can repair it and protect your roof and home.
