Hanging Decorations Without Damaging Your Roof

You’ve always longed to make your home as spectacular as that house on the corner during the holidays. This year, you’ve decided to do it, and indeed, you’ve spent a mint on lighting and other decorations. The one thing you worry about is how to put all of this up without damaging your roof. The good news is that it’s possible to make your house the talk of the neighborhood without damage. Here’s how.

First, Get the Roof Inspected

Before you place that first skein of Christmas lights, have a professional roofer inspect your roof. This will let you know whether it’s strong and sound enough to support the decorations you wish to place on it. An inspection is also a good idea if you haven’t had the roof checked out in a while.

Use Clips

One of the most important ways to spare your roof when you install Christmas decorations is to use clips instead of nails or staples. They’re cheap and can be found at Big Box and hardware stores. Best of all, they’ll spare your roof tiles.

Make Sure the Decorations Aren’t Too Heavy

You’ll want to avoid decorations that are just too heavy for your roof to bear. In other words, you wouldn’t want to install a life-sized Santa Claus, reindeer and a sleigh full of gifts made of some solid material on your roof. You should also avoid putting heavy decorations on your home’s gutters or fascia. It might be better to put up inflatables, but you’ll need to make sure they’re secure enough not to be knocked over by the wind.

Use the Right Extension Cords

If you’re using extension cords to help you light everything up, use those rated for outside use. The cords shouldn’t be so long that they become trip and fall hazards. You might want to use clips with extension cords to keep them stable.

Let Someone Else Decorate Your Roof

Even if you think you’re sure-footed and have repaired a roof shingle now and then, putting decorations on your roof is different. There are professionals who know how to safely decorate roofs for the holidays. Get in touch with one of them, and stay off your roof.

Joe promptly answered our call for assistance, even though it was the day before Thanksgiving. Joe went out of his way to complete a roof inspection within a very tight time frame and provided the information we needed. He took the time to answer our questions and was polite and punctual as well.
