During the holidays, many of us have seen homes that are decorated from their chimneys down to their front yards. These decorations are often strings of lights, ornaments, figures, or a combination of all three. When done right, they can be breathtakingly beautiful. Though you may not have something as sensational in mind, this year you’ve decided you’re going to decorate the outside of your house for the holiday, including your roof. Of course, you’re going to need to do it in a way that doesn’t harm your roof, you, or anyone else. Here are some tips from our roofers.
Know Your Roof
First, if your roof has a pitch of 45 degrees or more, don’t even bother going up there. If you really must have decorations on your roof, call one of our roofers for assistance.
Don’t Use Fasteners That Puncture
When securing decorations to your roof, don’t use fasteners that can puncture it, such as nails or staples. They not only cause holes, but you may puncture electrical wiring, which is dangerous. The best way to fix lights to your roof is to use shingle, gutter, or ridge clips.
If you’re going to put figures on your roof, choose inflatable ones that can be held down by sandbags, twine, or ropes.
Use Only Lightweight Decorations
Even if your roof has a slope that’s fairly safe to walk on, you shouldn’t put heavy items on top of it. Our Reno winds can topple them, and their weight can dent and damage your roof.
Don’t Put Anything Near Your Chimney
You may have seen some homes with lights strung around their chimneys, but this is a bad idea. It’s even worse if you use your chimney. Holiday decorations tend to be flammable, so make sure that there’s a distance of at least 2 to 3 feet between your decorations and your chimney.
Protect Your Own Safety
Even before you start to work on your roof, there are things to consider to protect yourself, including:
- Don’t work when it’s very cold, raining, or snowing
- Make sure the roof is sound
- Use the right ladder
- Use the right tools, and gather them together before working
- Use a helper
